Cindy Key's workshop on Effective Networking Strategies

At the WIN workshop last night, Cindy Key, talked about effective networking strategies. She explained why it is difficult to connect and seek help during a job search.
She highlighted 3 points:
DITCH. In our job search, we should ditch/eliminate a mindset or habit. For some of us, we might want to ditch sitting behind a computer and filling out online applications. We should try to call our target company and follow it on LinkedIn. Recruiters will not hire you till they know you, like you, and trust you.
DARE. We should dare to take a risk. We should make a presence/have visibility to recruiters. We should aim at having at least 125 contacts on LinkedIn.
DO. We should set a task that we must accomplish. We should optimize our search engines on LinkedIn. Recruiters get to know you by your LinkedIn profile, twitter feeds etc. We should ensure that our references know about us because recruiters will talk to our references first. We should be clear about what we want to be known for and communicate the same to our references.
Some of the tips shared by Cindy include:
·        Don’t ask for a job…ask for a connection.
·        Update your picture on LinkedIn
·        Drop the go-it-alone attitude. Find a buddy with the same goal.
·        Seek and be open to feedback

Nancy Dube's workshop on Customizing Resumes

Seasoned HR professional, Nancy Dube, presented a great workshop about how to customize your resume and addressed the obstacles faced during a job search.

Some of the points in her presentation were:

· Your resume should reflect that you are a fast learner, high achiever and a quick adapter with diversified skills.

· Functional resumes are key. What sets you apart is your accomplishments/achievements.

· It is alright to show time gaps. You should explain what you did to fill in the time(e.g. volunteer expeience, resumed classroom studies, joined a committee etc.)

· Don’t lie in your resume.

· An older employee’s resume can show the past 10-12 years of experience instead of 25+ years

· Recruiters are always looking for people who are lifelong learners and willing to work.

Nancy also touched upon how stay-at-home moms and entrepreneurs can join the workforce. She said that their resume should reflect transferrable/portable skills.

She concluded the workshop by going over resumes and helping the attendees fix their resumes.

Jill Huggett's workshop on Informational Interviews

Certified Professional Career Coach and Resume Writer, Jill Huggett, conducted a workshop last night about Informational Interviews.

She stressed on the importance of networking as the #1 tool for getting jobs. She mentioned that 70% of jobs are got from networking. "Networking, job boards and recruiters are the three main components of a successful job search", she said. An informational interview is a networking tool used to gather information/research, broaden your network and obtain more contacts. She explained how second connections in LinkedIn are key for networking.

Jill advised that a candidate should try to reach out to someone in the HR department of a company and schedule an informational interview to learn about the culture of the company and to find out who they are looking to hire. Informational interviews will help expand your network and get you more information and contacts.

Jill, a Hiring Manager with 20+ years of experience in building a successful career in financial services, recommended that LinkedIn is critical to your professional life. She touched upon functional resumes (accomplishments-driven resumes) being more effective. As a first step, she encouraged everyone to write down the names of 3 people to call today.

Julie Bernardin's Workshop

Employment expert - Julie Bernardin conducted a very good workshop this evening.

The key goals of the workshop were:

1) How can I describe my credentials in a way that distinguishes me from others?

2) Presenting my value to a potential employer by connecting their needs to what I can provide.

The participants worked in groups/teams to get a feel of how to present themselves to an interviewer and got valuable feedback from their team mates .

Julie stressed that, although it is popularly believed that our resumes should reflect our history, they should not. Resumes can include some history but they are documents that should show what we can do for the employer.

One of her tips was that it would be a good idea to set a direction in your resume by giving a headline/title followed by a branding statement about you.
