Awesome Presentation on LinkedIn by Kate Gray


Kate Gray (Electronic Resources Librarian and Technology Expert) provided a detailed walk-through of LinkedIn – the leading professional networking website. She elucidated several features of a LinkedIn account. She guided WIN participants through setting up an account, managing ones profile, adding ones resume, background, summary, etc. She included many pointers and tips in her workshop. Kate concluded her presentation with information about two other useful online tools for job searching - AtoZDatabases and Gale Career Transitions – that can be accessed through our Library website.

LinkedIn Demystified - Workshop on April 24

Networking is considered the key to a successful job search. Participating in networking events like the WIN meetings at the library is a great way to network. It's also important to have an online presence in the #1 professional networking site, LinkedIn. According to Wikipedia, LinkedIn has more than 200 million members in over 200 countries and territories. If you have a LinkedIn profile, chances are you'll be able to connect with recruiters or hiring managers in the company you wish to be a part of. Learn all about how to set up an account and create a compelling profile on LinkedIn. Kate Gray, the Electronic Resources Librarian, will present at this workshop on Wed, Apr 24 at 6:30 PM.

Bonnie Petrovich - 'Doing Work You Love!'


Bonnie Petrovich, Professional Career and Executive Coach, led an interactive workshop on ‘Doing Work That You Love.’ She said that the ideal dream job would be one that takes into account your aptitude and your passion. Any good job transition starts with the question “What do you want to do next?” Any aspect of a job transition - resume, cover letter, etc. - begins with this question. Then, using the process of elimination, you can find out what you don’t like to do. Career assessments and personality type tests are helpful. Personal Branding - how you market yourself (knowing what your set of skills and abilities are) – is very important. Some of the strategies for finding a job that you love include: 1. Continue questioning and searching for what you really want to do. 2. Search online job sites for keywords and job descriptions that really interest you. 3. Network and go for informational interviews. 4. Volunteer to do what you really love to do. During the presentation, Bonnie posed some thought provoking questions like – “If you had one message for the world, what would it be?” “If you had a storehouse of all the money you would ever need, how would you spend your time?”

"Doing Work That You Love" by Bonnie Petrovich

"Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do. Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do." This is a quote from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. As part of the Big Read, the Shrewsbury community will be reading Tom Sawyer.

So, it is appropriate that in our next workshop on Wed, April 10, 6:30-8 PM, Bonnie Petrovich, certified career and life coach, will talk about the practicalities of doing work that you love. Her presentation is influenced by bestselling author and coach, Tama Kieves, and also based on her own personal story of evolving into work she loves.
